Well, well, well, this is my last entry in continuation to our trip in
Singapore’s Jurong Bird Park. We’re done with the
Penguin Coast, the
Lory Loft, and the
Flamingo Pool and now let’s enter to the fascinating
'World of Darkness' where species of owls habituate (hehehe!)

From
'Lory Loft Aviary', Balong and I decided to walk than to
ride a tram to the ‘World of Darkness’ exhibit. I have to
admit we were already exhausted when we arrived at the place because we
visited almost all the attraction within the park. We did a lot of walking
(as in a LOT!). We bought an unlimited
ticket for a tram ride (SGD 5); however, we only used it once as we prefer to be up-close with the species of birds 'on foot'.

We
passed through the exhibits of the toucans, the hornbill, the royal
ramble, the scarlet ibises, and the bird of paradise before we reached
the vicinity. At first, we have no
idea really what to expect, as we don’t know what they offer in this
enclosure (ahahaha!). We were wondering because it's around 2 in
the afternoon yet we haven’t seen any tourist getting in the premises,
so strange. On the other hand, we enjoyed it
a lot since me and Balong were the only visitors at that time (scary a bit huh! world of darkness, remember? awoooooohhh!!! ~ ahahaha!).

This exhibit is considered
‘Asia’s first nocturnal bird house’. The area is a bit dark like the
Penguin Coast where signage is the only source of
light. In here, they applied a reversed lighting technique which
transforms day to night and vice versa. This induces nocturnal creatures
like the owls to come alive during the daylight
hours.

Just in the entrance, a sculpture of an owl standing on a branch welcome us (whoooottttt whhhhootttt ~ thats the sound of an owl, ayt? ahahaha!); it seems the boldness of
its eyes converse that ‘hey, enter at your own risk’ (ahahaha!).
It’s really cold when we get in, it’s like we’re walking in the middle
of the night through a creepy jungle along a moon-lit path where no one
is around (ahahaha!). Well, Balong
was with me; however, he has his own business snapping pictures and it
feels like I was all alone as we refrain from talking because of
exhaustions (ahahaha!).

There are so many
instructions that you need to follow once you’re within. They clearly
specify that ‘camera flash’ is strictly prohibited. These birds are not
used to flash; thus,
set your camera in a night mode or simply switch off the flash. They
are not use to noise either, so please lower your voice or better yet
just whisper if you are accompanying someone (ahahaha!). Besides there is nothing
to talk about as there are lots of concise information
in each pen that explains what you need to know.

What is great about this enclosure, they basically replicate the natural habitat of owls in the wild.
Even its dark yet you can clearly see them inside a viewing glass panel under a simulate ‘moonlit night”.
This is the closest we can get to be up-close and personal with these creatures since most of these birds are
hard to find even at night where they are normally active.

We
just thought that only owls habituates in there we never expected that
Black-crowned Herons, Stone Curlews and Lesser Whistling Ducks were
situated in there too; but, we were wondering why
we haven’t seen them there (haisssssssssssssstt!!!). We've only
seen 5 out of 9 species they have, I was checking all the shots we did
maybe we can spot some of them in our snaps but, unfortunately NOPE!!! Well, better luck next time I guess or maybe, we’re just really too tired to think of the minor details, our apology (ahahaha!).

So there you go, that is the story of
our stop-over in the ‘World of Darkness’ not that scary at all but a
very bright experience even it's dark inside. This is the first exhibit
in Asia; thus,
come in here for you to feel what we felt.
